Outsider Art & Co. , a bilingual magazine (English and French) dedicated to outsider art in all of its many facets, has just been launched. The magazine is set to appear three times a year and it aims at promoting a non-academic figuration which escapes classification, while also taking the liberty to stray away from the fixed boundaries of what is usually called “art brut”.
“By outsider art we mean both a family of artistic expression, equally far removed from the formal rules of academic art and the informal rules of contemporary art and its market. But we also mean a special way to approach art and to take it in: with one’s heart and one’s gut rather than one’s mind, with one’s raw sensitivity rather than one’s culture. A matter of the senses, not of sense, a sensual experience above all.” (Oana Amăricăi, editor-in-chief)
In order to reflect this approach, the writing style is personal and intuitive and the texts are short and unpretentious: the writers chose to simply suggest some of the possible interpretation keys, in order to make room for the images and the artists.
The summary of the first issue features a central dossier consisting of a previously unpublished interview of Roger Cardinal, on the topic of his foundational book Outsider Art, as well as of his work in the service of outsider art, his memories of Jean Dubuffet, the surrealist group and the landmark exhibition Outsiders, that he and Victor Musgrave put on in 1979.
Apart from that, there are the portraits of six artists: Caroline Dahyot (by Apolline Lepetit), Bernard Briantais, Jean-Luc Hugonenc (by Matthieu Peronnet), Hubert Duprilot, Marcel Bénaïs (by Oana Amăricăi), Brigitte Breyton (by Flavie Beuvin, who also contributed an insider look at the work of art-therapists and the real weight of their vocation) and, finally, the insightful and astute impressions of Sophie Lepetit following her visit of Michel Pozzetto’s outsider environment.
The magazine is offered for sale at a price of 10 euros and it can be ordered through the Facebook page: Outsider Art & Co. ( https://www.facebook.com/Outsider-Art-Co-109380757320598 ).
