Bert Monterona is a Filipino artist who advocates a universally kindred humanity.
His characters often seem displaced in their respective worlds. Here lies the core of his message: in our day to day lives, we are bound to ceaselessly fight, which may de-structure the more fragile human spirits. In their "innocence", sincere, spontaneous people are vulnerable to the complexity of life and to the too many social, cultural, religious, spiritual and political norms.
The artist equally insists on the place and the roles dedicated to women in the Philippine culture. He depicts them not as exemplary mothers, nor as sexual goddesses, but as humans who just want to exist through themselves.
